Airtel and MTN Drive Nigeria’s Mobile Subscriptions to 171.3 Million in August 2025

Nigeria’s mobile telecoms market rebounded in August 2025, with active subscriptions rising to 171.3 million after a July decline. MTN retained leadership at 52.31% share and 89.6 million users, adding 499,540 lines. Airtel followed with 33.89% share and led net additions with 1.5 million, reaching 58 million subscribers. Globacom added 173,244 to 20.9 million, while T2 (formerly 9mobile) was flat at 2.7 million amid network-modernisation efforts including infrastructure sharing with MTN and renewed vendor partnerships.

Teledensity increased to 79.14% from 78.11% (population base: 216 million). Internet traffic also climbed, to 1,152,347.24TB in August from 1,131,255.90TB in July. Momentum reflects competitive pricing, urban data demand, and continued investment. Operators that expand coverage, modernise networks, and launch data-centric services are best positioned to capture growth and sustain Nigeria’s digital inclusion in coming months........…continue reading

Nigeria’s 23% Tax on Remote Workers: What You’ll Pay & How

The Nigerian government is moving to bring remote workers into the tax net under new reforms, aiming for a total tax burden of roughly 23% on their earnings. In June 2025, President Bola Tinubu signed four major tax bills into law, overhauling the system to ensure that freelancers and remote employees pay taxes just like any other Nigerian income earner.

These changes mean that if you’re based in Nigeria and earning income from foreign companies or clients, you are now explicitly required to register with the tax authorities, declare your foreign income in Naira, and pay applicable taxes. This guide breaks down how the government intends to collect these taxes, which taxes apply, and how you can stay compliant while minimizing your liability.....…continue reading

šŸ“” SATELLITE

Nigeria’s NIGCOMSAT and Kenya’s Space Agency team up on satellites, security and policy

Nigeria and Kenya are deepening space cooperation after Kenyan Space Agency chief Hillary Kipkosgey’s visit to Abuja. Talks with NIGCOMSAT focused on joint satellite services, security applications, and harmonized space policies. The partnership aims to pool resources for broader coverage, lower costs, and stronger infrastructure.

NIGCOMSAT targets ₦8 billion revenue in three years through broadband and enterprise products, while Kenya seeks to build an ecosystem giving researchers and startups better access to satellite data. If translated into concrete projects—like joint EO programs or secure comms—the alliance could become a model for African cross-border space collaboration.......…continue reading

EU unveils €545M investment package to accelerate renewable energy development across Africa

The European Union has unveiled a €545 million investment package to scale renewable energy across nine African countries, focusing on electrification, modernized grids, and sustainable power access. Funded under the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, the projects span CĆ“te d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Somalia, Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Ghana, Madagascar, and Mozambique, with the largest share (€359.4m) allocated to CĆ“te d’Ivoire.

EU leaders say the initiative could create up to 38 million green jobs by 2030, strengthen energy resilience, and accelerate Africa’s clean energy transition. This builds on earlier EU support, including a €10.4 million investment in Nigeria’s Solar for Health Project...........…continue reading

Uber exits CĆ“te d’Ivoire after six years, marking first African market exit

Uber has exited CĆ“te d’Ivoire after six years, marking its first-ever market withdrawal in Africa. The decision, effective September 24, stems from regulatory hurdles, cash-flow challenges for drivers, and limited adaptation to local conditions. Launched in Abidjan in 2019, Uber faced stiff competition from Bolt, Yango, and Moja Ride, as well as rider complaints about pricing and service reliability.

The exit highlights the need for mobility platforms in Africa to tailor services to cash-based economies, offer flexible driver payouts, and build strong local partnerships. Competitors are now poised to capture Uber’s market share in Abidjan.......…continue reading
