Someone just spent $236,000,000 on a painting. Here’s why it matters for your wallet.

Late last year, a Klimt sold for the highest price ever paid for modern art at auction.

An outlier sure, but it wasn't a fluke. U.S. auction sales grew 23.1% in 2025. The $1-5mm segment even grew 40.8% YoY.

Meanwhile, Apollo’s chief economist Torsten Slock said to expect ‘zero in return in the S&P 500 over the coming decade.’

Each environment is unique, but after dot-com, post war and contemporary art grew about 24% annually for a decade. After 2008, about 11% for 12 years.

It’s also had near-zero correlation with the S&P 500 since ‘95.*

Now, Masterworks lets you invest in shares of artworks featuring legends like Banksy, Basquiat, and Picasso.

  • $1.3 billion invested across over 500 artworks.

  • 28 sales to date.

Bfree Raises $3.1 Million for Digital Loan Recovery Expansion

What Happened

Bfree has secured $3.1 million in new funding to expand its AI-driven credit recovery and distressed loan management platform across Africa.

Founded in 2020, the startup helps banks, microfinance institutions, and digital lenders recover unpaid loans using machine learning tools, automated communication systems, and personalised repayment plans. The company has now raised more than $12 million in combined equity and debt funding since launch.

Bfree says it has partnered with over 30 financial institutions across Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana, processing distressed loan portfolios worth more than $740 million.

Why It Matters

The funding highlights a growing problem in Africa’s fintech ecosystem: rising defaults from digital loans issued through mobile lending apps and online platforms.

This has created growing demand for ethical, technology-driven debt recovery infrastructure that can help lenders manage non-performing loans without relying on aggressive collection tactics.

The investment also reflects a broader shift in African fintech, where investors are increasingly focusing not just on payments and lending apps, but also on the infrastructure supporting credit sustainability and financial risk management.

What to Watch

Key areas to watch include:

  • Expansion of Bfree’s distressed loan acquisition business

  • Adoption of AI-driven debt recovery systems across African lenders

  • Regulatory changes around digital lending and debt collection

  • Growth of secondary markets for distressed consumer loans

  • Whether ethical recovery models can remain profitable at scale................….continue reading

Glovo Plans Sh10 Billion Kenya Expansion by 2030

What Happened

Glovo has announced plans to invest an additional Sh10 billion in Kenya by 2030 as it expands its digital commerce and delivery operations in the country.

The announcement was made during the launch of the company’s new Nairobi headquarters, which will serve as part of its African digital operations hub. Glovo says Kenya has become one of its fastest-growing markets globally, with platform orders growing by 40% in 2025.

The company currently operates in 12 Kenyan towns and cities, working with more than 6,000 merchants, 2,200 daily riders, and over 600 employees. It also plans to double its workforce within the next two years.

Why It Matters

The expansion reflects the growing importance of digital commerce, mobile payments, and app-based services in Africa’s urban economies.

Delivery platforms are increasingly evolving beyond restaurant delivery into broader “everything apps” offering groceries, courier services, pharmacy products, retail items, and other on-demand services.

Kenya’s strong mobile money ecosystem, led by M-Pesa, has helped accelerate this shift by making digital payments and app-based commerce more accessible.

What to Watch

Key areas to watch include:

  • Expansion of Glovo’s operations beyond Nairobi

  • Growth of quick-commerce and multi-service delivery platforms in Kenya

  • Rising competition among delivery, logistics, and retail platforms

  • Integration of AI into logistics and customer operations

  • The role of digital commerce platforms in job creation and urban economic activity............….continue reading

AWS Expands Amazon Connect With Agentic AI Tools

What Happened

Amazon Web Services has expanded its Amazon Connect platform with four new agentic AI solutions designed to integrate artificial intelligence directly into enterprise operations.

The new offerings — Amazon Connect Decisions, Amazon Connect Talent, Amazon Connect Customer, and Amazon Connect Health — are built to function as AI teammates embedded within existing business workflows.

The tools target areas including supply chain management, recruitment, customer engagement, and healthcare operations, allowing organisations to deploy AI capabilities without completely rebuilding their existing systems.

Why It Matters

The expansion reflects a broader shift in enterprise AI adoption, where businesses are increasingly looking for practical AI systems that integrate into operational workflows rather than standalone automation tools.

AWS is positioning Amazon Connect beyond its origins as a contact centre platform into a broader enterprise AI ecosystem covering multiple industries and operational functions.

The move also highlights growing demand for sector-specific AI infrastructure in areas such as healthcare, logistics, workforce management, and customer support.

What to Watch

Key areas to watch include:

  • Enterprise adoption of AWS’s new AI workflow tools

  • Competition with other enterprise AI providers like Microsoft and Google

  • Expansion of AI-powered operational systems across industries

  • How businesses balance AI automation with human oversight

  • Growth of “AI teammate” models in enterprise software ecosystems...........….continue reading

South Africa Rebuilds AI Policy

What happened

South Africa has withdrawn its draft national AI policy after investigations revealed that several academic references cited in the document were fake and likely generated through AI hallucinations. The draft, which had already been approved by Cabinet and released for public comment, was intended to guide the country’s long-term AI governance strategy.

In response, Communications Minister Solly Malatsi announced the formation of an independent expert panel led by Benjamin Rosman to rewrite and review the policy framework.

Why it matters

The incident has raised serious concerns about credibility, oversight, and institutional readiness as governments increasingly adopt AI tools internally. South Africa had positioned itself as a potential leader in African AI governance, particularly through plans for AI regulation, ethics oversight, and safety institutions.

The scandal also highlights a larger global issue: governments and organisations are beginning to use generative AI in policymaking faster than they are developing verification and governance processes around it.

What to watch

Attention will now shift to how quickly South Africa can restore confidence in its AI policy process and produce a revised framework with stronger technical and institutional oversight.

The new expert-led review could also reshape the country’s approach to AI governance, potentially moving toward a model that is more locally grounded rather than heavily influenced by European regulatory frameworks..............….continue reading

Apple and Google Launch Encrypted RCS Chats

What Happened

Apple and Google are rolling out end-to-end encrypted messaging between iPhone and Android users through the latest version of RCS (Rich Communication Services). The feature is currently launching in beta and is designed to improve privacy and messaging quality across both ecosystems.

The update enables encrypted cross-platform chats while also improving group messaging, media quality, read receipts, typing indicators, and overall interoperability between iMessage and Android messaging systems.

Why It Matters

For years, communication between iPhone and Android users relied on outdated SMS standards, leading to poor media quality, broken group chats, and lack of encryption. The divide also contributed to the long-running “green bubble vs blue bubble” ecosystem split.

This rollout marks a major shift toward more secure and unified mobile communication. It also reflects growing regulatory and consumer pressure on major tech companies to improve interoperability and privacy protections across platforms.

Beyond user experience, the move positions encrypted RCS as a stronger alternative to traditional SMS, helping native texting compete more effectively with messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal.

What to Watch

The biggest focus now will be adoption speed and full global rollout beyond beta testing. Questions also remain around whether all carriers, Android manufacturers, and regional operators will fully support encrypted RCS consistently.

As cross-platform messaging improves, the broader smartphone industry may face increasing pressure to standardise communication features rather than keeping users locked into isolated ecosystems.........….continue reading
