This editionās developments across Africaās innovation ecosystem highlight a growing focus on digital security, connectivity, and climate investment. In Nigeria, the Central Bank has introduced new safeguards that restrict mobile banking apps to a single device per user, a move aimed at reducing fraud and strengthening financial security in the rapidly expanding digital payments space. The Nigeria Data Protection Commission is also tightening privacy enforcement, warning against filming Nigerians without their consent as content creation and street interviews continue to surge online.
In the telecom sector, MTN has pushed back against claims that its FibreX service requires a minimum of 100 customers before deployment, clarifying its fibre rollout strategy. Beyond Nigeria, global partnerships are driving innovation: the UK and South Africa have launched an AI Observatory to automate telescope operations, while fresh climate capital is flowing into the continent with iSAT Africa and Proparco announcing $30 million in new investments to accelerate sustainable infrastructure.

CBN Restricts Mobile Banking Apps to One Device

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has mandated that mobile banking applications be restricted to a single device per customer, a move aimed at strengthening security in the countryās instant payment ecosystem. Under the new guidelines, which take effect on July 1, 2026, customers switching devices will be required to complete re-activation and multi-factor authentication procedures.

NDPC Cracks Down on Filming Nigerians Without Consent

The Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has issued a stern warning to content creators, urging them to stop recording and posting images or videos of Nigerians without their consent. The move comes as social media creators increasingly exploit street-style footage and public recordings for online content, often violating citizensā privacy rights.
According to a public notice released on Friday, the NDPC said such actions contravene the right to informational self-determination guaranteed under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution and the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDP Act). The Commission emphasized that violations could attract legal sanctions or criminal prosecution.......ā¦.continue reading

MTN Refutes 100-Customer Minimum for FibreX Deployment

MTN Nigeria has clarified that its FibreX broadband service does not require a minimum of 100 customers in a location for deployment. Chief Broadband Officer Egerton Idehen explained that rollout decisions are based on technical feasibility, infrastructure readiness, and financial sustainability, rather than fixed adoption quotas.
Fibre-to-the-home networks involve significant groundworkādigging trenches, laying cables, and connecting neighbourhoodsāwhich makes careful planning essential. While community interest helps prioritize expansions, there is no mandatory threshold. MTN FibreX, offering speeds up to 1Gbps and unlimited data, has grown rapidly, with subscribers rising from 11,794 in January 2025 to 89,441 in January 2026, and the company plans to expand coverage further across Nigeria...........ā¦.continue reading

UK-South Africa Launch AI Observatory to Automate Telescopes

The United Kingdom and South Africa have partnered to create the Intelligent Observatory programme, integrating artificial intelligence into telescope operations to improve efficiency and data quality. Implemented by the UKās STFC Hartree Centre and the South African Astronomical Observatory, the initiative enables telescopes to monitor instruments, process observational data, and detect astronomical events autonomously.
AI tools also allow researchers to quickly access technical documentation and automatically correct observational data for atmospheric and instrument effects. Funded through the UK Research and Innovation International Science Partnership Fund, the programme combines machine learning and large language models to streamline workflows, reduce manual monitoring, and enhance research productivity. ......ā¦.continue reading
