Canal+ to make purchase offer for remaining MultiChoice shares before April 8

Canal+, the prominent French media company under Vivendi, has disclosed its intention to officially propose the acquisition of additional shares in the South African pay-TV company MultiChoice that it presently does not possess. The announcement is slated to be made no later than April 8, according to Canal+’s statement on Monday.

This development follows a recent ruling by South Africa’s Takeover Regulations Panel on Wednesday, which mandated Canal+ to promptly announce its firm intention due to its increased stake of 35.01% in MultiChoice back in February, triggering a mandatory offer requirement.

In response to the Panel’s decision, Canal+ expressed its respect and commitment to comply. The media group confirmed that it has sought and obtained an exemption from the Panel, allowing flexibility in adhering to the prescribed timing requirements. The Panel has subsequently extended the time frame by an additional 25 business days....…..continue reading

EU Slaps Apple with Almost $2 Billion Fine Over Restricting Alternative Music Apps

Apple has been hit with a record $1.95 billion (€1.8 billion) fine by the European Commission for infringing EU antitrust regulations across the music streaming market on the App Store, surpassing any initial expectations. The penalty is a response to the investigation initiated in 2020 after Spotify lodged a complaint, alleging that Apple was deliberately trying to suppress its music service to eliminate competition with iTunes and Apple Music.

The Commission stated that Apple has been prohibiting music streaming app developers from sufficiently informing iOS users about cheaper and alternative music subscription services accessible outside the app. Additionally, developers were prevented from providing instructions regarding how to subscribe to such offers. This practice is known as ‘anti-steering’ and is considered illegal under EU antitrust law..…..continue reading

Twitter ex-CEO Parag Agrawal, 3 others sue Elon Musk for $128 million in severance payments

Parag Agrawal

In a legal showdown, Twitter ex-CEO Parag Agrawal and three former Twitter executives, have taken legal action against Elon Musk, accusing him of withholding over $128 million in severance payments. The lawsuit, filed in a northern California federal court, alleges Musk’s determination to recoup funds from the $44 billion Twitter deal led to the refusal of promised severance payments to the ousted executives.

The lawsuit contends that Musk’s public commitment to withhold severance payments as part of the broader financial strategy has left former executives, including Agrawal, without the substantial payouts they were due. The legal action follows Musk’s firing of several high-ranking executives upon assuming control of Twitter, signaling a broader shake-up in the company’s leadership.

The dismissals, which included Vijaya Gadde, Ned Segal, and Sean Edgett, were not unexpected given their roles in Twitter’s legal battle against Musk’s initial attempts to back out of the purchase agreement. Each executive, including Agrawal, was in line for significant severance payouts, a key component of Musk’s acquisition deal......…..continue reading
