Good Morning Valued Subscribers👋

Nigeria has approved the rollout of a nationwide Geographic Information System (GIS) digital postcode system, marking a major step toward modernising the country’s addressing infrastructure. The initiative aims to replace outdated and inconsistent location descriptions with a standardized, technology-driven framework designed to improve mail delivery, emergency response, urban planning, and digital commerce operations.

The adoption of a GIS-based postcode system reflects broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s digital and geospatial infrastructure, a critical foundation for smart city development, financial inclusion, and efficient public service delivery. By formalising location data across states and municipalities, the government is seeking to enhance data accuracy, boost logistics efficiency, and support the growing demands of Nigeria’s expanding digital economy.

GSMA to Pilot ₦55,000 4G Smartphones

The GSMA Handset Affordability Coalition (G6) has announced plans to pilot affordable 4G smartphones in Nigeria and five other African countries in 2026. Priced at roughly ₦55,000 ($40), these devices aim to bridge Africa’s digital divide and make internet-enabled smartphones accessible to millions.

The initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the GSMA Coalition, leading African telcos, and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). G6 operator members—including Airtel, Axian Telecom, Ethio Telecom, MTN, Orange, and Vodacom—plan to produce low-cost 4G devices to accelerate smartphone adoption across Africa. The move builds on minimum device requirements unveiled at MWC Kigali in 2025...….continue reading

FAAN Issues 70,000+ Cards

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued over 70,000 Go Cashless cards following the nationwide enforcement of its electronic payment system across Nigerian airports on March 1, 2026. Although the policy was introduced months earlier, compliance surged after implementation, with about 40,000 cards processed within three days — adding to the 30,000 previously issued.

The new system eliminates cash payments at airport toll gates, car parks, and executive lounges, requiring users to pay via the Go Cashless contactless card, debit/ATM cards, or approved E-tags. FAAN acknowledged initial congestion caused by late registrations but expects traffic conditions to stabilise as adoption increases.............….continue reading

NCC Proposes 14-Day Notice for SIM Churn

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has opened a public consultation on proposed amendments that would require telecom operators to provide subscribers with at least 14 days’ notice before churning their SIM cards. The measure forms part of a broader rollout of the Telecoms Identity Risk Management System (TIRMS), a cross-sector platform designed to curb fraud linked to recycled, swapped, barred, or dormant mobile numbers.

Under the proposal, operators must notify users through alternative contact channels such as a secondary phone number or email and report all churned numbers to TIRMS within seven days. The initiative aims to prevent fraud associated with reassigned numbers, particularly in banking and digital financial services..........….continue reading
