Google is putting $2.1 million directly into developing the country’s AI talent pipeline, and honestly, it feels like someone finally remembered to bet on the people behind the innovation, not just the infrastructure.
This isn’t just another big-tech press release. It’s a nudge, a reminder that Nigeria has the brains, the ambition, and the growing ecosystem to actually shape the future of AI, not simply consume it. And when a company like Google pulls out its wallet, it usually means the momentum is already there.

Google Invests $2.1M to Power Nigeria’s AI Talent

Google has launched a $2.1 million fund to strengthen AI talent development in Nigeria, supporting five local organizations working in cybersecurity, innovation, and AI education. The investment will help integrate advanced AI curricula into universities, fund developer innovation challenges, and improve nationwide digital safety programs.
The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s goal of unlocking up to $15 billion in economic growth through AI by 2030. It also builds on Google’s decade-long digital investments—such as the Equiano subsea cable and large-scale training programs—signaling renewed confidence in Nigeria’s tech potential. The funding aims to close the continent’s AI skills gap and equip young Nigerians to compete and innovate in the global AI economy..….continue reading

20M Nigerians to Get Internet Through NigComSat Push

The Federal Government has unveiled a major plan to provide internet access to 20 million Nigerians currently excluded from the digital economy. The project will combine NigComSat-1R’s satellite capacity with Nigeria’s expanding fibre network, including a planned 90,000 km fibre rollout and thousands of new towers.
The hybrid model aims to connect remote, economically unviable regions while supporting national broadband targets and enabling growth in telemedicine, online education, fintech and e-governance. However, high equipment costs, power issues and digital skills gaps pose implementation challenges. NigComSat also aims to commercialize unused capacity and generate N8 billion in revenue over the next three years as part of the push...............…continue reading

Russia Threatens to Ban WhatsApp

Russia’s telecom regulator has issued its strongest warning yet: WhatsApp will be fully banned if Meta refuses to grant Russian authorities access to user data and encrypted messages. The government claims WhatsApp is being used for terrorism and fraud, but critics say the real goal is to force citizens onto state-controlled platforms like the MAX super-app, which lacks strong encryption.
The threat comes amid Russia’s push for a “sovereign internet” and follows earlier restrictions on voice and video calls. A full ban would disrupt communication for over 95 million users and accelerate the shift toward government-monitored digital tools..............…continue reading

FCT Enforces Strict Smartphone Ban

The FCT Administration has begun enforcing a sweeping ban preventing civil servants on Grade Level 14 and below from using smartphones, smartwatches, and other internet-enabled devices during office hours. The policy requires workers to lock their devices in storage cabinets and rely only on basic non-internet phones.
Although officials claim the ban was agreed upon at a staff meeting, many employees say they were pressured into compliance. The directive is widely believed to be linked to a viral video of Minister Wike in a confrontation with a Naval officer. Labour groups have condemned the move as authoritarian, warning it will hinder productivity and violate workers’ rights....…...continue reading

Musk Brings Grok to X’s Following Feed

Elon Musk has rolled out a major update to X by placing Grok AI in charge of ranking posts in the “Following” feed, effectively ending the default chronological timeline. Instead of showing posts in real time, Grok now prioritizes content based on predicted interest, engagement history, and relevance. Users can still switch back to chronological order, but the AI-ranked feed is now the default.
The move positions X as a fully AI-driven platform and turns it into a massive real-world testbed for Grok. However, concerns are growing about accuracy, bias, and whether Grok is reliable enough to curate such an important information stream...…...continue reading
