Good Morning Valued Subscribers👋

We’re halfway through the week, and while most of us are just catching our breath, Moniepoint seems to be stepping on the gas. The Nigerian fintech giant just closed a massive $200 million Series C, securing an additional $90 million in the process — and that’s no small feat in today’s funding climate.

In a year where investors have been extra cautious, this raise feels like more than a funding milestone. It’s a quiet but powerful statement that confidence in African fintech isn’t fading, it’s maturing. Moniepoint isn’t chasing hype; it’s building depth — scaling infrastructure, expanding access, and reminding us that strong fundamentals still win.

The company’s growth also signals something bigger about where the continent’s digital economy is headed. Payments, small business tools, and financial inclusion aren’t just buzzwords anymore — they’re becoming Africa’s most investable stories.

So as we ease into the midweek rhythm, let’s take a cue from Moniepoint: keep building, keep refining, and keep believing that execution still beats excitement every time.

Moniepoint Secures Extra $90M, Closes $200M Series C

Moniepoint is on a serious roll. The African fintech powerhouse just bagged another $90 million in funding — bringing its total Series C raise to over $200 million after last year’s $110 million round. That’s a massive vote of confidence in what’s already one of the continent’s most successful financial platforms.

The new cash comes from big names like Visa, Leapfrog, Google’s Africa Investment Fund, and Development Partners International, among others. The goal? To expand across Africa and beyond, build new products, and keep driving financial inclusion for small businesses and everyday users.

Moniepoint isn’t your average startup — it’s already profitable (a rare feat in fintech) and serves over 10 million customers, handling more than $250 billion in transactions every year. Founder and CEO Tosin Eniolorunda called the milestone a proud moment, saying the company is staying true to its mission: helping African entrepreneurs and bringing “financial happiness” to people everywhere..…..continue reading

FRSC Set To Roll Out Digital Driver’s Licences In Nigeria

No more waiting months for your licence or holding onto that temporary paper. The new system means you can now walk into a licensing centre, do your biometric capture (contactless!), and walk out with your permanent licence the same day. Yep — on the spot.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, says it’s all part of a major reform to fix years of backlog and frustration. The FRSC has already slashed the old backlog of 800,000 unprinted licences in half — and they’re working 24/7 to clear the rest.

So how does it work? Instead of pressing your fingers on a scanner, the new system uses contactless biometrics to capture your details in seconds. Then, thanks to high-capacity printing machines, your licence is printed instantly — no more central delays, no more “come back in two months.”....…..continue reading

Nigeria’s Civil Servants Go Back to School — This Time, to Learn AI

When you think of a typical civil servant, you probably imagine files, paperwork, and endless queues — not AI and data analytics. But that’s exactly what Nigeria wants to change.

The Federal Government has teamed up with Google and Apolitical to launch an AI Campus — a digital learning platform designed to help public servants understand and use artificial intelligence to make government services smarter and faster.

The goal isn’t to turn everyone into coders. It’s to teach civil servants how to use AI to automate boring, repetitive tasks, improve policymaking, and make public services less stressful for citizens. Imagine renewing your licence or applying for grants without the usual bottlenecks — that’s the dream......continue reading

MTN Leads Nigeria’s Rural Broadband Expansion

Nigeria’s biggest mobile network, MTN Nigeria, is doubling down on a mission that could change how millions of people connect — bringing fast internet to rural communities that have long been left behind. 🌍📶

A new report from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and Ookla shows that rural areas are finally catching up — and faster than anyone expected. Average download speeds in these regions have jumped from 7.5 Mbps in January to 15 Mbps by September 2025. That’s nearly double in less than a year!

While city dwellers still enjoy higher speeds (thanks to 5G, which hits between 180–220 Mbps), rural users are starting to stream, browse, and work online more efficiently than before. The credit goes mainly to the 4G LTE networks powering Nigeria’s digital backbone — and MTN has been leading the charge with major investments to reach underserved communities........continue reading

OpenAI Raises ChatGPT Prices in Nigeria After New Digital Tax

Starting November 1, 2025, using ChatGPT in Nigeria will cost a bit more. Why? Because Nigeria is now applying its 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) to foreign digital services like OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

That means if you currently pay ₦31,500 (about $20) for ChatGPT Plus, your new monthly bill will be around ₦33,862.50 ($22.43). OpenAI confirmed this change in an email to users, explaining that it’s simply following Nigeria’s updated tax laws.

Here’s what’s happening: Nigeria wants foreign digital companies — from OpenAI to Netflix — to play by the same tax rules as local businesses. Under the country’s 2021 VAT guidelines, any company offering digital services to Nigerians must register, collect VAT, and send it to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS)........continue reading
