MTN South Africa Launches MoMo Pay to Digitise the Informal Economy

MTN South Africa has officially launched MoMo Pay, a digital payment platform designed to help individuals and small businesses—especially in the informal sector—accept cashless payments quickly and affordably.
Designed for simplicity and accessibility, MoMo Pay is MTN’s answer to the long-standing dominance of cash in the country’s informal economy, which accounts for over 95% of transactions in that sector.
With MoMo Pay, merchants can accept instant payments via QR codes, merchant IDs, or payment requests—all at a transaction fee of just 0.5%, significantly undercutting existing service providers. In a market where informal traders are often excluded from digital financial services due to cost and complexity, MTN’s new offering promises to unlock wide-reaching economic opportunities......……continue reading

Tanzania Blocks X After Police Account Hacked to Spread Fake News of President’s Death

Access to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has been blocked in Tanzania after hackers breached the official account of the Tanzania Police Force and falsely announced the death of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The incident has ignited a broader conversation about digital security, government control of the internet, and freedom of expression in the East African nation.
The situation unfolded when a message was posted from the verified X account of the Tanzania Police Force, claiming that President Hassan had passed away. The alarming announcement quickly went viral, triggering widespread confusion and concern across the country and among the diaspora. The police force responded shortly afterward with a statement denying the report and clarifying that the account had been compromised.
In an attempt to contain the fallout and prevent further misinformation, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) instructed all local internet service providers to block access to X. The restriction was confirmed by NetBlocks, a global internet observatory, which reported that X became inaccessible on major networks throughout the country...…..…continue reading

Lagos State Secures $22 Million Investment to Expand Fibre Infrastructure

Lagos State has secured $22 million in foreign direct investment (FDI) for the expansion of its fibre optic infrastructure. Announced during a ministerial press briefing commemorating the second year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, this investment positions Lagos for a new era of smart connectivity and economic empowerment, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
According to Special Advisers Femi Daramola (Infrastructure) and Dr. Adekunle Olayinka (Works), the investment will fund the installation of 2,700 kilometers of additional fibre ducts, building on 3,000 kilometers already completed by Western Telecommunications and Engineering Services (WTES). This expanded network is expected to significantly enhance internet speed and coverage across underserved areas, enabling small businesses to fully embrace the digital economy.
The initiative is being delivered through the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA), which has also deployed a Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping fibre routes—an innovation that improves infrastructure planning, coordination, and service delivery responsiveness......…..…continue reading
