Nigeria’s First Digital Hospital Pilot Brings Healthcare Access to Rural Communities

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani
The Nigerian Federal Government has launched a digital village pilot project in Ibwa 2, Gwagwalada, Abuja, aimed at bridging the country’s digital divide. Spearheaded by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the initiative provides free internet, digital education, and a digital hospital to the underserved rural community of over 12,000 residents.
With support from Huawei and Globacom, the project delivers remote medical consultations, online learning with virtual teachers, and community-wide Wi-Fi access. It is part of a broader plan to establish 7,000 digital healthcare facilities across Nigeria, prioritising northern regions where over 80% of the 20 million unconnected Nigerians reside.
The initiative seeks to improve access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities while fostering national inclusion. Affordable smartphones were also distributed to help residents connect. The project reflects the government’s commitment to empowering rural communities through technology-driven development..……continue reading

Elon Musk’s xAI to Pay $300m to Bring Grok Chatbot to Telegram’s Billion-User Base

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has committed $300 million in a mix of cash and equity to integrate its Grok chatbot into Telegram, aiming to reach the platform’s over one billion users. The one-year partnership allows Grok to be embedded across Telegram’s app ecosystem and used for tasks such as chat summarization, writing suggestions, sticker creation, and customer query handling. Telegram will receive 50% of all subscription revenues generated via the platform.
Initially exclusive to Telegram Premium users, Grok is now poised for a broader rollout. Users will be able to pin the chatbot atop conversations and access it directly through Telegram’s search bar. The move mirrors Meta’s integration of generative AI into Instagram and WhatsApp, intensifying the race to dominate AI-powered messaging.
For Telegram, this marks a strategic monetization step beyond ads and subscriptions. CEO Pavel Durov confirmed Telegram’s 2024 revenues surpassed $1 billion, with 12 million premium users and over $500 million in cash reserves. While the deal bolsters Telegram’s AI credentials, it comes amid controversies over the platform’s content moderation, which led to Durov’s arrest in France in 2024. Still, the xAI deal signals Telegram’s ambition to lead in the AI messaging space........…continue reading

Twitch’s Rise: How a Gaming Platform Became a Global Streaming Powerhouse

Twitch, the Amazon-owned livestreaming platform, has grown from a niche site for gamers into a cultural and commercial juggernaut in the global streaming landscape. Originally launched in 2011 as a spin-off of Justin.tv—a general-purpose live video platform founded in 2007—Twitch was created to focus solely on video game content. The platform’s runaway success led Amazon to acquire it in 2014 for nearly $1 billion. Since then, Twitch has steadily evolved, expanding its content verticals, creator tools, and community features to position itself as a leader in the streaming world.
In 2024, Twitch reported an impressive 20.35 billion hours watched, underscoring its dominance in the live-streaming sector. With an average of 2.55 million concurrent viewers, the platform’s appeal continues to grow. This surge is attributed to Twitch’s commitment to real-time engagement, allowing creators to interact directly with their audiences, fostering a sense of community unparalleled by other platforms.
While YouTube Live, Facebook Gaming, and Trovo have all made strategic moves to compete in the livestreaming space, Twitch remains dominant in terms of average concurrent viewers and hours watched. According to Streamlabs’ 2024 report, Twitch accounted for over 70% of all live streaming hours viewed globally, far ahead of YouTube (21%) and Facebook Gaming (5%).....…..…continue reading
