Obafemi Banigbe appointed as new CEO of 9mobile

Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Limited (EMTS), operating as 9mobile, has appointed Obafemi Banigbe as its new Chief Executive Officer. This move represents a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing transformation efforts. Banigbe replaces Juergen Peschel, the outgoing CEO, who will remain involved as a Consultant to aid the transition.

Banigbe brings extensive experience at the executive level, with a deep understanding of the African business landscape. His career began at Celtel, now Airtel Nigeria, where he served as the Director of Operations. He also held key roles at Ericsson, including Network Support Group Manager for Access and Transport Networks. His tenure at Millicom Ghana as Chief Operations Officer included a period as Interim CEO, as well as Chief Technical Officer roles in Ghana and Tanzania.

His international experience spans the United States and several African countries. Before joining 9mobile, Banigbe co-founded Silver Rock Technology Services Ghana, a strategic advisory firm in the Telecom, Media, and Technology sectors. M-Pesa and Dahabshiil join forces to capture Ethiopian remittance market

Ethiopians residing overseas have been provided with a new, streamlined method for sending remittances back home, thanks to a recent agreement between M-Pesa and the international money transfer company Dahabshiil, signed in Addis Ababa.

This collaboration offers the Ethiopian diaspora a more convenient and immediate way to transfer funds directly to M-Pesa digital wallets in Ethiopia. Dahabshiil, a company with nearly half a century of experience in facilitating cross-border money transfers, has established a significant global footprint, operating in over 100 countries.

By integrating with M-Pesa’s robust financial platform, Dahabshiil aims to further cement its role as a leading remittance provider in Ethiopia. The African Development Bank (ADB) Group Board of Directors has approved a $17 million grant to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania for the Project for Promotion of Gender-Sensitive Agricultural Value Chains and Women’s Entrepreneurship (PCVASGEF)

Funded under the Global Agriculture and Food Security Programme (GAFSP), this project aims to boost women’s income and support female entrepreneurship in Mauritania by increasing productivity and adding value to agricultural products.
