US Tech Giants Unveil Ambitious $500 Billion AI Initiative

OpenAI is collaborating with Oracle and Softbank to establish data centers designed to support artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, with an immediate investment commitment of $100 billion. During a press conference at the White House, US President Donald Trump, accompanied by the leaders of the three companies, described the initiative as a “resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential.”
OpenAI has long advocated for substantial investments in infrastructure to bolster AI development and has sought government backing for these efforts. The creator of ChatGPT, along with Softbank, announced that their joint venture, named Stargate, plans to invest $500 billion over the next four years.
“This will be the most important project of this era,” stated Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. He acknowledged President Trump’s support, despite the project already being in progress, saying, “We wouldn’t be able to do this without you, Mr. President.” The initiative involves constructing AI infrastructure, including data centers, and is projected to create over 100,000 jobs, according to President Trump.....…continue reading

PalmPay sets sights on Asian market expansion

PalmPay, a prominent Nigerian fintech company, is setting its sights on entering the high-stakes remittance market with plans to expand into Asia by 2025. The company is gearing up to venture into the cash transfer business, specifically targeting the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
Although the company is keeping specific details under wraps, Chika Nwosu, Managing Director of PalmPay, shared some insights during a media roundtable last week. “We’re heading to the Middle East and Southeast Asia and looking at other African countries too,” he stated. “We’re still in the research and planning phase, but if there’s an opportunity, we’re going for it.”
The remittance market is indeed a lucrative one. According to the World Bank, global remittances to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) reached $685 billion in 2024, marking a 5.8% increase from the previous year. Asia, with its vast diaspora and rapidly growing economies, accounts for half of these remittances. Countries such as India, China, and Pakistan are at the forefront, with India alone receiving $129 billion last year.....…continue reading

Microsoft loses exclusive cloud provider status for OpenAI

Microsoft was once the exclusive provider of data center infrastructure for OpenAI to train and run its AI models, but that exclusivity has ended.
Coinciding with the announcement of Stargate, OpenAI’s massive new AI infrastructure deal with SoftBank, Oracle, and other partners, Microsoft has revealed a new agreement with OpenAI. This agreement grants Microsoft the “right of first refusal” on new OpenAI cloud computing capacity. Essentially, this means that Microsoft will have the first opportunity to host OpenAI’s AI workloads in the cloud. However, if Microsoft is unable to meet OpenAI’s needs, OpenAI is free to seek services from rival cloud providers.....…..continue reading

Microsoft's LinkedIn sued for disclosing customer information to train AI models

Microsoft's LinkedIn has been sued by Premium customers who said the business-focused social media platform disclosed their private messages to third parties without permission to train generative artificial intelligence models.
According to a proposed class action filed on Tuesday night on behalf of millions of LinkedIn Premium customers, LinkedIn quietly introduced a privacy setting last August that let users enable or disable the sharing of their personal data.
Customers said LinkedIn then discreetly updated its privacy policy on Sept. 18, 2024 to say data could be used to train AI models, and in a "Frequently Asked Questions" hyperlink said opting out "does not affect training that has already taken place."...…..continue reading
