Sun King and d.light Lead $555M African Startup Funding Surge in July 2025

African startups saw a funding surge in July 2025, raising $555 million, the highest monthly total of the year and a sharp jump from $391.1 million in June. About 83% of this capital came from debt financing, driven by mega-deals in clean energy and climate tech. Kenyan off-grid solar leaders d.light ($300M) and Sun King ($156M) dominated, reflecting investor confidence in Africa’s pay-as-you-go solar sector. South Africa’s Candi Solar also raised $24M to expand commercial solar projects, highlighting the growing use of blended finance in climate-focused investments.
Green mobility gained traction with ARC Ride ($5M debt) to deploy 5,000 electric motorbikes in Kenya and Zero Carbon Charge ($5.6M equity) for solar-powered EV charging hubs in South Africa.
Beyond energy, early-stage activity spanned fintech, AI, biotech, healthtech, and manufacturing. Highlights include Cerebrium ($8.5M AI infrastructure), ORA Technologies ($7.5M super-app), BFREE ($3M debt fintech), and Yikodeen ($1.5M manufacturing).
East Africa led by value, North Africa scored notable local-led rounds, and Southern Africa showed sector diversity. The month underscores Africa’s dual trajectory: large-scale debt for infrastructure gaps and diverse early-stage venture funding fueling innovation………read more

OpenAI says ChatGPT is on track to reach 700M weekly users

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is on track to hit 700 million weekly active users, a milestone that reflects how generative AI has become embedded in daily life. Launched in November 2022, ChatGPT quickly became the fastest-growing consumer app in history, surpassing 100 million users in two months. Now, nearly three years later, it’s more than a viral tool—it’s infrastructure.
ChatGPT is everywhere: powering emails, coding, reports, and brainstorming across Microsoft 365, Slack, Notion, and countless APIs. Its integration into workflows shows AI has shifted from novelty to necessity. Yet, this surge raises questions about originality, trust, bias, and the impact on education and jobs as entry-level tasks become automated.
While ChatGPT empowers creators, students, and teams to achieve more with less, its widespread use highlights the ethical and societal challenges of relying on AI for thought and decision-making. With 700 million people engaging weekly, this is no longer just OpenAI’s story—it’s a defining moment for how society adapts to AI.......…continue reading

TurnStay Raises $2M to Transform African Travel Payments with Low-Cost Cross-Border Solutions

Turnstay founders - Alon Stern and James Hedley
South African travel fintech TurnStay has raised $2 million (R34 million) in seed funding led by First Circle Capital, with participation from TLcom Capital, Enza Capital, Incisive Ventures, CVVC, and Equitable Ventures. Founded by Alon Stern (ex-Prodigy Finance) and James Hedley (Quicket co-founder), the startup is tackling Africa’s costly and inefficient cross-border payment systems for tourism operators.
Traditional payment processing in Africa carries fees above 7% and faces frequent international failures. TurnStay uses a merchant-of-record model, payment orchestration, and stablecoin-based local settlement, reducing fees by up to 70% and enabling faster, more reliable bookings. The platform integrates with major booking engines and property management systems, helping operators secure direct bookings and avoid commission-heavy global OTAs.
Since its $300,000 pre-seed in 2024, TurnStay has processed over R250 million in transactions. With the new capital, it plans to expand across Africa, deepen its fintech stack, and empower local operators with cost-effective, seamless international payments amid a growing tourism market.........…continue reading

TikTok given three-month ultimatum by Egypt to avoid nationwide ban

Egypt has issued TikTok a three-month ultimatum to comply with local laws and cultural values or face a potential ban, according to Ahmed Badawi of the House Telecommunications Committee. The warning followed a high-level meeting with TikTok Egypt & North Africa, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA), and lawmakers, where TikTok agreed to enhance content moderation to reflect Egypt’s socio-cultural sensitivities.
The move highlights growing government scrutiny of global platforms in conservative markets and aligns with broader African trends, where countries like Nigeria and Kenya are enforcing local offices, data localisation, and content compliance.
A ban could disrupt Egypt’s digital economy, affecting thousands of creators, influencer campaigns, and youth-driven innovation. TikTok is a cornerstone for self-expression and monetisation, but critics argue some content undermines moral and cultural codes. The outcome of this standoff may set a regional precedent for how governments assert digital sovereignty over foreign tech platforms...…continue reading

Elon Musk’s Grok Imagine Pushes AI Content Boundaries with NSFW Video and Image Generation

Elon Musk’s xAI has launched Grok Imagine, an AI-powered image and short video generator for SuperGrok and Premium+ X subscribers on iOS. The tool creates 15-second animated clips with audio from text or image prompts, offering modes from Normal to the controversial Spicy Mode, which allows NSFW content like nudity and sexualized imagery. This unfiltered approach sharply contrasts with OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo, which enforce stricter moderation.
Early adopters have produced anime avatars, photorealistic women, and surreal scenes, with some outputs entering the uncanny valley due to waxy textures and exaggerated features. Celebrity misuse is restricted, but partial nudity and risqué visuals remain accessible. In just days, users generated over 34 million images, reflecting massive viral adoption.
By enabling unfiltered creative freedom, Grok Imagine positions xAI as both innovative and controversial, raising ethical, deepfake, and regulatory concerns. Musk calls it “AI Vine”, signaling ambitions for viral short-form AI content despite growing scrutiny over AI safety and misuse.....…continue reading
