Uberā€™s 10% Driver Pay Raise Stalls in Lagos Standoff

Ride-hailing giant Uberā€™s attempt to mend fences with drivers in Lagos, Nigeria, has hit a rough patch. The companyā€™s recent announcement of a 10% increase in driver earnings fails to appease the disgruntled workforce caught in the crossfire between Uber and the Lagos State government.

On April 2nd, Uber implemented a 10% bump to per-kilometer and per-minute fares for its UberX product in Lagos. The company attributed the raise to the ā€œcurrent macroeconomic situation.ā€ However, drivers remain skeptical. Many believe itā€™s a tactic to win them back after weeks of tension with the Lagos authorities.

The root cause of the conflict is a data-sharing disagreement. The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation mandates ride-hailing companies to integrate with their system through an API, allowing real-time access to trip and location data. Uber, citing privacy concerns, has only agreed to share daily data dumps. This resulted in the impounding of Uber-affiliated vehicles and a potential driver boycott organized by the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON)..ā€¦ā€¦continue reading

The union, representing senior staff in the telecom sector, accuses subcontractors linked to Huawei Technologies Nigeria Limited of unfair labor practices. These subcontractors include Reime Group, Allstream Streamenergy Solutions Limited, Uppercrest Limited, Tyllium Nigeria Limited, and Specific Tools and Techniques Limited..ā€¦ā€¦continue reading

Facebook Under Fire: Sold User Chats to Netflix for $100 Million?

Explosive allegations have emerged suggesting Facebook (now Meta) granted Netflix access to usersā€™ private messages in exchange for data and a hefty sum of money. This revelation comes from an ongoing antitrust lawsuit against Meta, raising serious concerns about user privacy and potential anti-competitive practices. The accusations paint a picture of a potentially anti-competitive partnership that prioritised profits over user privacy.

At the heart of the lawsuit lies a bombshell claim: Meta allegedly granted Netflix access to user chat messages through ā€œInbox APIā€ agreements. This programmatic access, reportedly starting in 2013, could have allowed Netflix to analyse vast quantities of private conversations for a staggering $100 million. In return, Netflix is said to have provided Facebook with valuable data on user interactions with its recommendations......continue reading

Nigeria Intensifies Pursuit of Fleeing Binance Executive as Crypto Giant Faces Trial Today Thursday

Nigeria's pursuit of Binance executive Nadeem Anjarwalla, who escaped custody in March, intensifies with Interpol's involvement, signaling a significant escalation in the ongoing saga between the country and the cryptocurrency exchange.

Despite Anjarwalla's absence, both he and fellow executive Tigran Gambaryan are scheduled to stand trial today for alleged money laundering, highlighting uncertainties surrounding the future of cryptocurrency regulation in Nigeria. The outcome of the trial and extradition efforts, as well as Gambaryan's lawsuit against the Nigerian government, will have far-reaching implications for the cryptocurrency industry and regulatory landscape globallyā€¦ā€¦continue reading
